"If I weren't making music," says Claudia, "I'd be either nuts or a practicing sexual anthropologist!" It is precisely Claudia's passion for truthful inspiration that infuses all of her songs with a driving intensity that recalls shades of Madonna's early gender bending boy-toying. Many of Claudia's fans call her Carrie, after Carrie Bradshaw, the beloved heroine of HBO’s infamous series “Sex and the City.” "Most people totally get me and my music better after they experience my live show. The stage is where all of the beauty of creativity and the dynamics of my songs really come to life. I love the moment of creation of a song, when suddenly you have a page full of magnificent lyrics and a melody swirling in your head and before you know it, you’ve grabbed the guitar, channeled some chords and finished a song. The studio is where you have to commit to your new child but on stage, you can bring new spanking life to your creations, which is what really gets me psyched! Most people leave my shows having some opinion of me, whether they love or hate what I do, but at least I get them scratching their heads and thinking about me or something outside themselves.” In fact, one New York reviewer found Claudia’s live show to be a combo of downtown New York style performance art and stand-up comedy and even called her ‘a sexually charged, lyrically inspiring dynamo for a new generation.’
Claudia was born in the heart of the Big Apple and first discovered her passion for music by working as a back-up dancer for various pop and freestyle artists. Such live gigs led to stints in music videos for several prominent artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Mariah Carey and 90’s heartthrob originators of the boy-band genre, New Kids on the Block. “Working with top choreographers and video directors really gave me a stage presence and confidence about myself at a very young age,” says Claudia, “so when I started writing music and performing my own material live, I was already so comfortable with myself that it was a natural transition for me.” After building a name for herself in New York City and working with a top music management firm, Claudia decided to head west to Los Angeles, moving in with several actor friends and forming a very tight-knit and creatively inspiring circle of artists. It was a ballsy move to leave behind a city she loved, but Claudia felt she had to evolve musically and seek out new inspiration for her to continue her musical journey.
After a couple of years in Los Angeles and playing with such awesome live bands as Betty Dylan, Claudia formed a songwriting partnership with Barry Goldberg (Kelly Clarkson, Jewel, Gerry Goffin, Bob Dylan, Percy Sledge,), who helped her hone her musical and collaborative skills. After two years of collaborating with Barry, Claudia felt it was time to spread her wings and test the water for new collaborators. Shortly thereafter, Claudia found herself in the studio with music master Steve ‘Hip’ Hopkins, best known for his work with such Toyko based artists as Meyou and for numerous soundtrack and commercial compositions. Together, Hopkins and Claudia started working with some of Los Angeles’ top live and studio musicians such as Gary Novak and Joel Shearer, of Alanis Morissette’s awesome live Sexual Chocolate band, and who also played on all of her multi-platinum albums under the watchful eye of uber-producer Glen Ballard. Working with such amazing and gifted musicians inspired Claudia to dive in and record an EP of material for her own indie label, Lava Mama Music.
In the spring of 2003, Claudia connected with well-known producer, engineer Dave Aron (Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Sublime, Dr. Dre) at a LAMP music seminar in Hollywood. Shortly thereafter, Claudia and Dave began meeting at his studio high atop Sunset Plaza in the Hollywood Hills, and collaborating and recording Claudia’s songs with musicians. The result of these collaborations, along with the two tracks co-produced by Claudia and Steve Hopkins, comprise her current EP “Repeat Offender,” available online at CDBaby.com/claudiafield, Tower.com, Tower Records, Amoeba Records and for download on I-Tunes. “I feel like this album is a great place for me to start, but I also had a huge learning curve suddenly understanding my role not just as an artist, singer and a songwriter, but as a co-producer and executive producer. There are definitely things I would have done differently in hindsight, but for my first independent commercial release, I am so proud of the caliber of writing and I am still awed by how much heart and soul these in-demand musicians and producers put into the project. All you have to do is listen to my song “Another Shade of Blue” in either the pop or AC/Country Girl mix, and you can hear how much Joel, Steve and Dave put into it.”
The next stop for Claudia, in between her chasing boys and writing about her conquests, or lack thereof, is a new album tentatively entitled “Ghosts in My Attic & Other Tales….” One of the most dynamic tracks on the upcoming album, “Tales of the Great Cockblock” has already been spun on several college stations and is causing quite a stir. “Everyone at retail and radio tell me that an album by that name will never sell, but I disagree. The word ‘cockblock’ is being used more and more in pop culture and just like my metaphor for ‘Repeat Offender’, I give this word my own twist. I think this song will eventually catch on the way Alanis’ “You Oughta Know” did, where people had to fucking give it a chance and listen because it just screams from a place of truthful vulnerability. Even though I had to go through the heartbreak of a bad relationship, it was totally worth it to get to create this song. This is the one song I do live that makes people scared but also totally gets them thinking. I see a lot of people using this term in the future, as well as a hot Rolling Stone cover and interview screaming about what an angry young woman I am. Avril Lavigne may have her own version of angst and I totally adore that girl, but live on this earth into your late 20’s first and then come and tell me how fucking hard everything is! This song channels every emotion you can go through when someone you love and trust breaks that connection, but ultimately you rise above the depression and heartache and find the beauty of the emotional purification. I will always thank my cockblocking ex for finally setting me free in this way.”
Claudia is currently in the studio with producer rock producer Andy Troy (Sublime, Maven, Polar Bear), Kellii Scott (Tool, Perfect Circle, Queens of the Stone Age, Failure) and a team of all-star musicians, working on tracks for an upcoming online music distribution venture through AOL. Claudia has also been in talks with superstar legend and producer Nile Rodgers (Madonna, Chic, Duran Duran, Gavin DeGraw) and uber-producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, Aerosmith, Susan Suh, Dave Matthews) about collaborating and producing tracks for her upcoming LP. With so many fabulous creative opportunities on her immediate horizon, Claudia expects to have a hot, heavy and horny creative summer, channeling the muse and hanging with the labyrinth of superstar producers and musicians with whom she will be creating her next musical offspring.
